Connect your lights

illumiscore flashes LIFX and Govee lights. Connect one brand or both: LIFX with a token you make in your LIFX account, Govee with an API key Govee emails you. Each takes a few minutes.

LIFX: get your token

illumiscore talks to your LIFX lights through LIFX's cloud, using a token you make in your LIFX account. It takes a few minutes.

  1. Get the LIFX app

Install the official LIFX app on your phone (App Store or Google Play) if you don't have it yet.

  2. Sign in to LIFX

Open the app and create a LIFX account, or sign in to the one you have. Your lights belong to this account.

  3. Set up your lights

Follow the app's steps to connect your lights to Wi-Fi and give each one a name ("TV backlight", "Kitchen"). Those names show up in illumiscore.

  4. Open cloud.lifx.com

On a computer or your phone's browser, go to cloud.lifx.com and sign in with the same email and password as the app.

  5. Make a token

Click your email in the top right corner, then Personal access tokens. Click Generate New Token, give it a name like "illumiscore", and confirm.

  6. Copy it

LIFX shows the token once: a long string of letters and numbers. Copy all of it. Treat it like a password: anyone with it can control your lights.

  7. Paste it into illumiscore

Sign in to illumiscore and open Your lights. Paste the token into the LIFX side of step 1 and press Connect LIFX. Your lights appear in step 2.

  8. Pick lights and teams

Tick the lights that should flash (and give a light a TV delay if your stream runs behind), then follow your teams. Press Test flash on a team to see it.

Govee: get your API key

illumiscore talks to your Govee lights through Govee's cloud, using an API key you ask for in the Govee Home app. It works with Govee lights that show colors and are connected to Wi-Fi (bulbs, strips, lamps). Lights that only use Bluetooth, and Govee devices that don't show colors, don't show up.

  1. Set up your lights in Govee Home

Install the Govee Home app (App Store or Google Play), sign in, and add your lights on Wi-Fi. Give each one a name; those names show up in illumiscore.

  2. Apply for an API key

In the Govee Home app, tap Profile, then the gear icon (Settings), then Apply for API Key.

  3. Fill in the form

Enter your name and a reason (for example, "Flash my lights when my team scores"), agree to the terms, and submit.

  4. Check your email

Govee emails the key to the address on your Govee account, usually within a few minutes. Treat it like a password: anyone with it can control your lights.

  5. Paste it into illumiscore

Open Your lights, paste the key into the Govee side of step 1 and press Connect Govee. Your Govee lights appear in step 2, next to any LIFX lights.

Govee lights have no built-in pulse, so illumiscore switches them between the team's two colors, about once a second for around 10 seconds (longer when your team wins). With lots of Govee lights, each flash is a little shorter, and a test flash uses up to 5 of them, with 20 seconds between test flashes.

Govee limits how often its lights can be changed, and may also limit how many changes each API key gets in a day. Each color change on each light counts, so lots of lights on a day with lots of scores could reach a limit. If Govee turns flashes away, illumiscore skips them rather than trying again, and your lights flash again once Govee allows it. LIFX lights aren't affected.

After a flash, each Govee light goes back to the color or white it was on, or off again if it was off. A light running a scene or music mode flashes too, then goes back to its last plain color: Govee doesn't tell illumiscore which scene was on, so turn the scene back on in the Govee Home app. A light that's offline is left alone.
